History
The writer of Proverbs writes "Where there is no vision, the people
perish." (Proverbs 29:18) Port Charlotte United Methodist
Church was organized by people who were visionary. On June 10, 1960,
Bishop Arthur J. Moore appointed The Reverend William Knecht to organize
and start a Methodist Church in Port Charlotte. Meeting for worship
for the first time in the Community Civic Center on July 17, 1960, a
handful of people began to see the vision unfold. The organizing
Church Conference was held on October 16, 1960, with The Reverend Jesse
Waller, District Superintendent presiding. There were 92 charter
members. In 1962 the first building was completed and on March 2,
1969, the Sanctuary was consecrated.
A beautiful hand hewn old
rugged cross was presented to the church by its maker, Chaplain Eli
Richard, on April 13, 1969.
With growth and continued vision, in December 1983 the beautiful
Fellowship Hall, Library, and office complex was consecrated to the glory
of God.
We continue to have a vision for the future. Port Charlotte is a
growing community as many younger families are moving into Port
Charlotte. We anticipate more growth in our church. Our
Long-Range Planning Team recognizes the need for more Sunday School
classrooms and more areas for programs. They have proposed this plan
for the future. It includes a Family Life Center, a gymnasium, more
parking space, and renovating the office areas.
With God's help we will move forward to more ministries in our community.
